See Optical Disc Drive Compatibility: CD for the current list of drives that are currently acceptable for submitting CDs (Audio CDs, CD-ROMs, and other CD formats) to redump.

General Technical Requirements
In order to make 1:1 CD dumps that are accepted at redump.info, drives (generally) require the following features:
*Dump data sectors in scrambled mode
*While dumping in scrambled mode, support dumping full subchannel (P, Q, R-W) and C2 error pointers
*Reliable C2 error pointers support
*Dump at least 75 sectors (1 second) of lead-in¹
*Dump at least 75 sectors (1 second) of lead-out¹

¹ Note: In rare cases, such as Audio CDs with large write offsets, data may be present far into the lead-in pre-gap or the lead-out and may require a drive that can read all 150 sectors of the pre-gap or more than 75 sectors of the lead-out in order to fully dump the CD.

Dumping Tools
Redumper
Redumper is the preferred and recommended dumping tool to use for dumps submitted to redump, the full list of support drives is here

DiscImageCreator
DiscImageCreator (DIC) was the recommended tool prior to Redumper's development and is also still acceptable for Redump submission with a few caveats.

Dumps with DIC are not acceptable for Audio CDs and only the good Plextor drives in the table below are acceptable when dumping with DIC.

Specific Drive Technical Details
Good Plextors
The following table of Plextor drive models have been recommended for use by Redump for many years, and are well tested. These models are unique in their ability to fully dump the lead-in of a CD (that is, the pre-gap and sectors before a pregap). Other good drives are capable of reading some portion of the pre-gap, but currently only these drives are known to be able to read all 150 sectors (and beyond the pre-gap). The latest firmware is linked for each model.

Note: While the PX-7xx series are capable of dumping DVDs, we recommend you use a different drive for DVDs to avoid unnecessary wear on these older drives.

Note also that like all old drives these models suffer from rubber degradation. And while not something that will affect dumping it can lead to issues with the tray ejection mechanism, requiring either a light knock on the drive or the usage of a pin to manually open it.

Despite having all the features of the above good Plextors, the PX-W4824 is not capable of reading the lead-in and is limited to just 75 sectors of the pre-gap.

Unable to read full lead-in like other Plextors (only 1 second of pregap is available)<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; 2. Illegal TOC discs may need dumping with --force-qtoc (Redumper) or /fulltoc (DIC)<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; 3. *Some reports of issues with CD-Text on Multisession CDs<br>Otherwise, PX-W4824 dumps are still acceptable for most Audio CDs and all CD-ROMs.

Some older Plextor drive models (e.g. PX-40TS, PX-W1210TS, PX-W4220T) are capable of reading in scrambled mode, but other issues prevent them from being classified as compatible for dumping CDs in most scenarios. Only the above good Plextor drives are compatible for dumping CDs.

MediaTek Blu-ray Drives
Blu-ray drives using the MediaTek MT1959 or MT1939 chipsets have been found to support the majority of the features required for dumping CDs compatible with redump. If the MediaTek drive supports the custom 0xF1 opcode that allows for reading from the drive's cache, redumper can be configured for lead-out reading and thus making these drives compatible with dumping CDs. The ASUS BW-16D1HT and many of the disc drives currently listed as acceptable for verifications on the compatible drives list are MT1959 or MT1939-based blu-ray drives that support cache reading and will work with redumper automatically (if not listed, you will need to provide flags when running redumper).

HLDS (LG, ASUS, etc)
Blu-ray drives manufactured by HLDS using the MediaTek MT1959 chipset have all the features required for good CD dumping, with some caveats. HLDS has both slim external USB drives (based on the same platform as the LG BU40N drive), as well as at least four "platforms" of their half-height desktop drives: JB9, JB8, JB7, JBC5.

Half-height desktop drives based on the older JB7 and JBC5 are currently accepted for redump verification submissions if they are on the compatible drives list and support the required firmware.

Half-height desktop drives based on the newer JB8 and JB9 platform had the 0xF1 opcode removed in later firmware versions, so require specific earlier firmware versions to read the lead-out with the cache (typically the earliest available). However, all of these drives are able to be cross-flashed to OmniDrive that enables reading into the lead-out of a CD without the use of the cache. Drives flashed to OmniDrive are acceptable for both new disc dumps and verifications. See the OmniDrive page for a detailed listed of compatible JB8 and JB9 drives and flashing instructions (redump recommends using OmniDrive for all submissions with JB8 or JB9 drives, rather than their stock firmware).

TSST (SH-D163C / TS-H353C)
A specific model of DVD drive manufactured by TSST (with MediaTek MT1339 chipset) has had its firmware patched by MoriGM to enable all the desired features for dumping CD to redump standards. This firmware is currently acceptable for verifications while it is being tested more broadly.
The patched firmware, currently revision "ZZ00", is compatible with the following specific models: Samsung SH-D163C, Toshiba TS-H353C, and rebadges of the TS-H353C (Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo).

To flash the firmware, you can run the redumper command given the drive path and firmware path:

redumper flash::mt1339 --drive=E: --firmware=TS-H353C_ZZ00-mod.bin

Copy Protected CDs
Some forms of copy protection require specific optical disc drives to dump correctly.

Dumping
Step 0: First determine if your disc is actually ring protected. To do this, examine the data side of the disc and look for visible dark circle(s). If you are unsure, attempt a normal dump or post an image in the Redump forums for assistance.

Step 1: Before dumping, first we will acquire metadata for submission using DIC. Begin a normal dumping process with your DIC-compatible drive with /c2 disabled. When it encounters the ring errors (it'll get stuck) click in the console window to freeze the process. Eject the disc at this time, and then continue the DIC process by hitting enter. After 10000 or so sectors (it doesn't have to be precise), freeze the process again, re-insert the disc, and then start the process again. Allow DIC to finish normally at this time and save the output info and logs for later. If multiple rings are present, you may be required to do the eject method multiple times.

Step 2: Move the disc over to the SOHD-167T drive, this will be used for the rest of the guide. Open CloneCD, select the "Read to Image file" button, and select the SOHD-167T drive. Right click the "Protected PC Game" profile. Go to the "Error Handling" tab and disable all options including "Intelligent Bad Sector Scanner" and "Fast Error Skip Settings" then hit OK, select the profile, and proceed to the next screen. IMPORTANT: Check the box where it asks to create a Cue-Sheet (.CUE) file, this is required for future steps. Save the IMAGE file wherever you'd like in an easy to access spot for future Command Prompt access. Begin the dumping process at this time. Allow CloneCD to finish dumping, this will take a while and may appear like it is making no progress, but let it continue, this may take a day or two. CloneCD will 0x55 error the ring protected sectors and generate a (nearly) complete dump. The drive will eject the disc on completion, remember to insert it back when the dump is complete. Before closing CloneCD, be sure to save the log output for submission.

Step 3: Now we will be using ECCEDC.exe to detect what sectors have errors in our CloneCD IMG file. Open a Command Prompt in the location you placed ECCEDC.exe and run the following command:<br>
ECCEDC.exe checkex <location of IMAGE.cue file><br>
ECCEDC.exe should have generated a log file (IMAGE.cue_EdcEcc_Track_1.txt). Open and search for the first line that says "2336 bytes have been already replaced at 0x55." The LBA of this line is your first ring sector. Scroll to the last uninterrupted instance and that is your last ring sector. Document this range somewhere, and repeat if there are multiple rings.

Step 4: Open an elevated (admin) Command Prompt window where you placed CDArchive.exe and run the following command after filling in the required information:<br>
cdarchive.exe --mode=ext --extrdrive=<DriveLetter> --extrstart=<FIRSTRingSector> --extrend=<LASTRingSector> --extroverread=0 --extrretries=100 --extrskip=1000 --extrdirection=<f or b> --extrdiscmode="cd" --extrsectdir="<SectorExtractionDirectory>" --extrrefcue="<PathToIMAGE.cue>"<br>
"SectorExtractionDirectory" is where the successfully read new sectors into the ring will be placed. "extrdirection" can be f for forward or b for backwards, supposedly the SOHD drive reads better backwards but this is unconfirmed. Once the command is run, CDArchive will attempt to read sectors at the edges of the ring protection (the end if you used b, the start if you used f). If CDArchive is not able to read a sector after multiple attempts, it is safe to assume that's all that can be read. The drive may get hot, if this happens give the drive a break, as it will not read as well when it is overheating. Attempt to read into the start and end of every ring present. When you are satisfied, move on to the next step.

Step 5: While still in the Command Prompt and navigated to where CDArchive.exe is, run the following command after filling in the required information:<br>
cdarchive.exe --mode=mer --merdiscmode=cd --mersrcdir="<SectorExtractionDirectory>" --meroutcue="<PathToIMAGE.cue>"<br>
This will merge all the newly acquired sectors by CDArchive into the CloneCD IMG. Copy all of the acquired sectors into your .ZIP DIC log file for staff examination.

Step 6: IMPORTANT: Before starting this step, create a backup copy of the IMG, CCD, SUB, and CUE files. Store them somewhere safe as this step can compromise your dump. After that is done, open CDMage and drag your copy of the .CUE file into the window. Click the "Action" tab at the top, then "Scan For Corruption." Click Scan and allow CDMage to check all sectors. If any are found to be corrupt, click "Action" again then "Repair Corrupted Sectors". If none are found to be corrupt, or none are repaired, you can delete your backup copy of the files and move to the next step. If any are repaired, save the file and the files created by CDMage become your new main files for the rest of the process. Please include a note in your submission if sectors were repaired with CDMage.

Step 6.5: (Only required if CDMage repaired any sectors) Open a Command Prompt and navigate back to ECCEDC.exe is placed. Run the following command on your CDMage repaired .CUE file:<br>
ECCEDC.exe fixex <location of IMAGE.cue file><br>
This will repair sectors corrupted by a CDMage bug (Sectors which are already filled with 0x55 pattern are edited to fill a reserved field with 0x00 value).

Step 7: Now we will be using ECCEDC.exe to gather updated ring sector ranges. Open a Command Prompt in the location you placed ECCEDC.exe and run the following command again:<br>
These are your final ranges and must be included in your Redump submission comments. The final error count from this log should be used for your Redump submission.

Step 8: If you have installed OpenHashTab, right click your latest IMG file and click "Hashes." OpenHashTab will generate new hashes for you to include in your !submissioninfo file and Redump submission.

Step 9: Submit the disc and all logs gathered to Redump normally. Include updated ring ranges in comments.

CDArchive Variables
--mode -> Could be "ext" (extract) or "mer" (merge), to extract or merge sectors;
--extrretries -> Number of times CDArchive will attempt to read a sector before moving on
--extrskip -> Number of unread sectors until stopping, count resets upon successful sector read.
--extrdirection -> Can be "f" (Forwards) or "b" (Backwards) for which direction you want CDArchive to scan. Backwards is recommended.
--extrdiscmode -> Media type (CD or DVD)
--extrsectdir -> Folder where you will place the extracted sectors (remember to create this folder before running this application)
--extrrefcue -> is for the CloneCD cue file related to the previous image file

When submitting dumps to Redump it is important to submit all Ring Codes that you can see. Ring codes that are too difficult to read are not required, but for the sake of completion, do your best.

If you want to get all the ring codes, a magnifying glass can help, also two recommended products on Amazon.
.

Another method is to use a smartphone that lets you keep the flash on non-stop when taking a photo, and at the same time using a headlamp - this also allows you to photograph the ringcodes for easier transcription and for proof.
General Ring Code Guide
Ring codes are the small letters and numbers near the center hole of discs. They can contain important information, such as for identifying software revisions. Always transcribe ring codes verbatim, keeping the same UPPER or lower case in use as printed. Separate any larger-than-single-space (" ") spacing breaks with a tab symbol for your submissions. Typically, if a ring code contains a character that looks similar to an asterisk, a standard asterisk is used as opposed to using the "closest" non-standard character (e.g. * instead of ❋, ⁕, etc).

Types of Ring Codes
*Mastering Code (laser branded/etched): Mastering Codes are the most pronounced of all ring codes. They often contain identifiers and other information depending on the disc manufacturer. They often wrap all the way around the disc ring and have spacing breaks in between.
*Mastering SID Code: Mastering SID Codes are nearby the Mastering Codes. They indicate what machine made the glass master of the disc. They are often smaller and sometimes hidden above the Mastering Code, barely legible due to size. They generally start with "IFPI", then followed by four or five more characters.
*Toolstamp or Mastering Code (engraved/stamped): Usually referred to simply as "Toolstamp". These are impacted into the disc. They are often very short and sometimes stamped backwards.
*Mould SID Code: Mould SID Codes are the most difficult to read. They indicate what plant the disc was manufactured at and the machine that did so. A list of SID Codes can be found at List of SID codes. They often require looking at a certain angle, bouncing light off of them at the right angle, or using with a magnifier or microscope. They are usually printed in the center-most area (the transparent area of the disc) and do not have color, simply being impacted onto the disc. They usually start with "IFPI" or "ifpi", followed by four or five alphanumeric characters, however additional text may be present. Mould SIDs can be present on both the data side and the label side of a disc.

Starting Point
Where to start in a ringcode:

*If there is a barcode-like section of the ringcode, start immediately after it and follow the text direction. Example
**Ringcode: <b>manufactured by optimal media production<tab>Tivola<tab>01/01<tab>A143740-01</b>

*If there is no barcode-like section, and no clear starting point, start with the manufacturer name. Example
**Ringcode: <b>ZOMAX-MN<tab>C26357<tab>870146</b>

*If there is no barcode-like section or manufacturer name, use your best judgement. Example
**Ringcode: <b>*1R* 0743523342<tab>B</b>

*If there are multiple rings of text on a single-layer disc, start with the ring closest to the center. Example
**Ringcode: <b>22752<tab>3<tab>MFG BY CREST NATIONAL - CA E</b>

*If text goes in two different directions, finish one direction follow above rules and then start the other. Example
**Ringcode: <b>-MASTERED BY NIMBUS-<tab>CDD7026 SIMON ARC ROM EN ·</b>

Example 1
This example makes use of a PlayStation 2 DVD-ROM, which was manufactured by Sony DADC in Austria.

The proper way to transcribe this is:

<span style="color:#ff0000">1</span>. Mastering Code (laser branded/etched): Sony DADC<tab>A0100368905-0101<tab>13

<span style="color:#00dc24">2</span>. Mastering SID Code: IFPI L553

<span style="color:#f800e9">3</span>. Toolstamp or Mastering Code (engraved/stamped): A2

<span style="color:#00baf0">4</span>. Mould SID Code: IFPI 94V1

Note regarding multi-layer discs
Dual and triple-layer discs will commonly have ringcode information on all layers (L0, L1 and L2). In the majority of circumstances, inner layer (closest to the centre of the disc) refers to Layer 0 with Layer 1 and Layer 2 being the ones closest to the outer edge of the disc.

However, please note that this is no rule and for many manufactures (such as Sony), this is often reversed. With Layer 0 being the outer and Layer 1 the inner ring. You should carefully check for any identifying information - in the below example (dual-layer DVD), you can see that the mastering code for the outer layer contains "L0", indicating that it is Layer 0 in this case and should go into the L0 field in Redump.

If in doubt, please provide a link to a photo or scan of the ring along with your submission to help us process it accurately.
System-Specific Quirks
PlayStation 1
PlayStation 1 discs are black, making full ring codes difficult to read - except Mould SID Code which is easy to read due to it being impacted.

To get full ring codes, special techniques are required.

1. Non-LED Flashlight + Scanner
*Scan the disc in a moderately lit room while shining the flashlight on it.

2. Certain Scanners
*Some scanners seem to be able to just outright scan the ringcodes, although it is not as clear as Method 1 and may require photo manipulation. Epson V600 @ 2400DPI (Left); @ 1200DPI (Right)

3. Nintendo Switch Joycon IR Camera + Joy-con Toolkit
*You can either read it directly from the Toolkit video feed, or point the camera at the disc sitting on a scanner while scanning.

4. IR TV Remote (Or other IR light source) + DSLR Camera
*Shine the IR light by pressing buttons on the remote while taking a picture with a DSLR compatible camera.

5. iPhone (Semi-recent) + VSCO App (Or other apps that let you keep the flashlight on while taking a picture)
*Use either a built-in or third party app that lets you take pictures with the LED flash on your phone remaining on the entire time you are 'aiming your picture' [not just for the flash].

*Place the disc data side up, and hold your phone approximately 5 inches or so away from it straight above it.

*If you slowly move your phone in a small circle clockwise or counter clockwise, you should see some interesting light reflections. Eventually, you'll be able to time it to where you see the full circle of bright color reflecting off the disc.

*After doing this a few times, you can experiment with the exact angle, and distance from the disc, but eventually, you'll be able to achieve the reflection in a way where the circle of bright colorful light lines up perfectly with the ringcode area (or close) and you can easily see the ringcode. If you have steady hands, you can snap a pic in that moment to capture it. Or worst-case, even if you can just use the reflection to see the ringcode data on your phone screen, that might work as well. You will eventually get rings of red and blue lights, and you can then "match" up those rings to the ringcode, and be able to snap the pic then and read everything.

PlayStation 2
PlayStation 2 DVD-Roms contain Mastering Code (laser branded/etched), Mastering SID Code, Toolstamp or Mastering Code (engraved/stamped), and Mould SID Code on the Data side + Mould SID Code on the label side.

PlayStation 2 CD-Roms do not contain Mould SID Code on the Label side.

Nintendo
Nintendo Mastering Code

Company-Specific Quirks
MPO
Discs mastered by MPO (IFPI L031 - IFPI L040) will often have time and date printed as an appendix to the Mastering SID (example).

Redump does not consider these as part of the Mastering SID though and they should instead be appended to the Mastering Code with a <tab> character.

Disctronics and Nimbus
Disctronics and Nimbus (IFPI L121 - IFPI L130 and IFPI L501 - IFPI L510) mastered discs will sometimes have their Mastering Codes printed in such a way that they become mirrored on the data side (example) and visibly when viewed from the label side.

Despite often looking like they are printed on the label side the codes are in fact not. And only the Data side Mastering Code field should be filled when submitting to Redump.

Nimbus mastered discs additionally has what Redump refers to as "Nimbus Dots". For more info on these and how to add them see the page for [/Symbols%2C_Logos%2C_and_other_Special_Cases "Symbols, Logos, and other Special Cases"].

Sonopress and Arvato
Mastering SID's by these companies (most notable in the LBxx and LPxx range) can be printed either with the standard "Lxxx" format or as "Lx xx" with a gap in the middle (IFPI LP 73 example). The reason for this disparity is unknown and both can sometimes be found on Dual Layer discs (example)

When submitting to Redump these get added as is.

Advant Medien
DVD-5 with Mastering SID LV26 will often have a second mastering code printed below the main one (Example). Add these to the L1 field of Redump.

Cinram
Cinram mastered discs (IFPI L381 - IFPI L390, most commonly seen on L386 ones) will often have mastering SID's printed as part of the mastering code without IFPI (Example). This is still treated as a Mastering SID for Redump purposes though, so add it to said field and replace it with a TAB character in the mastering code.

In addition: The mould SID (Most commonly IFPI 6000) is often printed without gaps on discs by this company. Add this to the relevant field as is

JEIL Records
Mould SIDs from this plant (IFPI D9xx) often have a non-standard dash between IFPI and the number. IFPI-D9J7 example.

Add these as written to Redump.

PMI/Technicolor Australia
DVD-9 Discs mastered by the Australian branch of Technicolor (IFPI L281 - IFPI L290) will sometimes replace the IFPI logo in the L1 mastering SID with "PTP" or "OTP". Instances of these get added as written on disc.

The purpose of this page is to give you a brief overview about the process for contributing to redump and assisting the project!

More details can be found in the various sections of the wiki and on the forum, but the general process for contributing is as follows:

Getting Started
1. Request a redump account on the forum.
:Apply for an account with a username, email, and password. Please check your spam folder for the registration email (and mark as not spam).

2. Review the wiki and particularly the Dumping Guides which cover a lot and answer most questions about contributions.
:If you still have questions, you can reach out on the forum or in the VGPC (Video Game Preservation Collective) Discord.

3. Submit a disc dump

# Login to https://redump.info/ and then click on Add Disc to go to the disc submission form.
# Fill in the fields to the best of your ability, including the dumping logs (or the name/version of the dumping program if it does not produce logs), and a link to your logs zip hosted elsewhere such as dropbox or mega.nz
# Wait for a moderator to process your submission. You may view the queue of current submissions to see the status. If your submission was rejected, you should re-submit the disc dump again with the requested changes (such as re-dump with new logs, transcribing ringcodes, etc).

As you are getting started, please take your time with your early submissions. Many questions can be answered by reviewing the wiki and the submission guides / threads referenced above. However, if you still need more assistance, please reach out for help either in the Dumping help area of the forum, or in the VGPC Discord. There are plenty of people willing to assist you!

Submission Guide
Follow this visual guide for how to fill in each field in the submission form. Note that this is a generic screenshot that doesn't show every field but should have most of them.
